Why Babel is the Best Family-Friendly Budget Hotel in Siem Reap
Are you planning a family adventure through Southeast Asia, making a natural stop in Siem Reap to show your kids the ancient wonders of Angkor?
Maybe you’re an "old backpacker" yourself, returning to the region years later to share the vibrant sights, smells, and magic of Cambodia with your spouse and children. Or perhaps you are a family on a multi-month journey across Southeast Asia, looking for a comfortable, reliable home base where everyone can catch their breath.
Finding the perfect place to stay with kids on a budget can be a challenge. You want a value-friendly option, but you also need a safe, peaceful, clean, and wholesome environment where your children are welcomed with open arms.
At Babel, our evolution into a family-friendly oasis wasn't a corporate marketing decision—it happened naturally, born out of love, community, and our own journey of growing up.
One of our favorite sights at Babel is seeing families slow down. No phones, no frantic itineraries—just a deck of cards, a cool drink, and a lazy afternoon together in our quiet garden oasis
How we accidentally became a family hotel
When the pandemic hit, schools and nurseries in Siem Reap shut down. We suddenly found ourselves with our own young kids, and our local staff's children, running around with absolutely nothing to do.
Instead of letting our staff go or leaving the kids with no place to learn, we came up with a creative solution that benefited us, our staff, the Treehouse International School, and local parents:
Professional Training & Salaries: Our friends at Treehouse International School hosted three of our Babel staff members at their campus for intensive childcare training.
A Win-Win Partnership: Treehouse then sponsored and paid the salaries of these three staff members to run our new "Busy Bees" nursery right here at Babel. This meant our staff learned valuable new skills, kept their salaries during a very difficult time, and we all had a safe, professional place for our children to learn and play.
Building the Space: Our staff rolled up their sleeves and helped us completely rebuild our garden and restaurant. We used recycled wood from the old restaurant to build an outdoor play space, and transformed two ground-floor rooms into a cozy nursery and summer school.
When the pandemic ended and travelers finally returned, we looked at this beautiful, joyful space we had built and made a choice: We are keeping it exactly like this. We had grown from young, care-free backpackers into parents ourselves, and we realized firsthand what families actually need when they travel.
Our "Busy Bees" Plastic-Free Nursery
Here is a peek inside the space we built with our own hands (and some recycled wood from the old restaurant!) during the pandemic. On the left is our outdoor wooden play café, and on the right is our cozy, bright indoor playroom.
True to our eco-friendly roots, we kept the space entirely plastic-free, focusing on beautiful, natural materials like bamboo, reclaimed timber, and rattan. What started as a safe haven for our staff's children and our own little ones is now a permanent, beloved part of the Babel family experience!
A Quiet, Safe Alternative to Party Hostels
While Siem Reap has plenty of cheap beds, many high-volume budget properties are corporate "party hostels." While they serve a purpose for solo backpackers, they are rarely a good fit for families.
At Babel, we offer a completely different, family-focused standard:
A Peaceful Oasis: Our properties feature quiet, lush tropical gardens and a refreshing, peaceful pool area. Your children can swim and play safely without the noise of a loud party crowd or a rowdy poolside bar.
A Warm, Wholesome Vibe: Our friendly, long-term local staff know our guests by name. We pride ourselves on our calm, secure, and respectful atmosphere.
ChildSafe Certified Since 2008: We don’t just say we are family-friendly; we back it up with global standards. We are proudly ChildSafe Certified, maintaining a strict commitment to child protection for over 15 years. Our entire staff undergoes professional training every three years to ensure our hotel is a proactive, secure environment for young travelers.

A Wholesome, Clean Kitchen (With an Adorable Kids' Menu!)
Our garden restaurant serves fresh, honest food made entirely from scratch. Because we believe in healthy eating for the whole family, our kitchen is completely MSG-free and refined sugar-free.
We know how hard it can be to feed picky eaters on the road, so we designed a dedicated, hand-drawn Babel Kids' Menu packed with balanced, comforting, and customizable options:
Mix-and-Match Mains: For just $4, kids can choose a main (like chicken nuggets, fish fingers, or creamy hummus) and pair it with healthy sides like steamed veggies, carrot & cucumber sticks, plain rice, or mash.
Simple Favorites: From child-sized fried rice (with tofu, chicken, or egg) and cheese toasties, to a warm bowl of Mac n' Cheese.
Healthy Treats: We also offer fresh fruit plates, yogurt with muesli, and—of course—a kids favorite - babyccino!
Pick a main, choose a side, and enjoy! Our hand-drawn Babel Kids’ Menu is designed for happy, healthy eaters. Everything is prepared fresh in our MSG-free, refined sugar-free kitchen, with plenty of customizable options for even the pickiest travelers.

Our Tuk-Tuk and Taxi Drivers are Part of the Family
One of the biggest worries when traveling with children is transport safety. At Babel, you never have to worry about negotiating with random drivers on the street.
Trained, Trusted, & Family-Focused: Through our Babel Education Program, we sponsor higher education, English classes, and professional growth for our team. Our drivers all have their own families—many have been with us for years and have grown up alongside our own children. They are incredibly warm, flexible, and understand exactly what traveling families need.
From Tuk-Tuks to Road Trips: Many of our trusted Tuk-Tuk drivers are also our minivan and taxi drivers! They can handle everything from your initial airport pick-up and drop-off to long-day tours exploring the further temples.
The First in Cambodia: Babel was the very first hospitality business in Cambodia to fully integrate all of our drivers into ChildSafe Protection Training, ensuring a proactive, secure environment for your kids.
