The situation at Babel Guesthouse right now

BlogPost from the 27th of October 2020

The last two months have been BUSY at Babel. Not busy with guests, the situation is still the same here - no tourists in sight! Siem Reap feels like a ghost town.

But we have been busy with projects. Thanks to donations from our Fundraising we have been able to keep our staff, and provide jobs to Tuk Tuk drivers available. Plus donated sacks of rice to our 28 families and provided meals to all our workers. We have even been able to give out bonus for everyone for Khmer New Year, like we do every year.

Plastic free Kindergarden

Because of the situation with COVID 19 there was no capacity for our youngest daughter at her preschool, and only three hours a day was available for her sister. Many of our staff and Tuk Tuk drivers are in the same situation with no school for their children. So our solution was to make them a play area here at Babel. We decided for it to be PLASTIC FREE, and build it with materials from our old bamboo restaurant. We made both inside and outside area, and the children absolutely LOVE it!

New Restaurant and kitchen

We are still in the process of remodeling our garden, after having to tear down everything because of the road building outside.

We have made a new solid roof for our restaurant and a new proper floor outside. We made new walls everywhere and we have given all the outside area a fresh look with new paint. We have also completely updated our kitchen, with fresh paint and new tiles.

One Family at the time keeps donating vegetables, rice, and noddles for all our staff and Tuk Tuk drivers. They have also donated hand soap, laundry soap and mosquito nets for everyone, and given us a whole bunch of lemongrass to plant at Babel - to keep the mosquitoes away. This year has been rough with huge outbreaks of Dengue fever and Chikungunya.

They have also helped us provide jobs to two of our Tuk Tuk drivers, who has helped them donate food and school packs to whole villages in the rural areas - for several hundred families.

They even gifted us wooden toys for our plastic free Kindergarden. So much appreciated!

A HUGE THANX to everyone who have donated, and to you who keep donating. Because of YOU we can keep going, we can keep creating jobs. We have many exiting plans, so stay tuned. We will keep you updated on this Blog!
