Siem Reap’s Most Magical Morning
The Equinox Sunrise at Angkor Wat: Siem Reap’s Most Magical Morning.
Twice a year, just before dawn, thousands of people quietly gather outside Angkor Wat in Siem Reap. Cameras are ready, the sky slowly brightens, and anticipation builds.
Then it happens.
Angkor Wat during the Equinox
For a few minutes during the equinox, the rising sun appears directly above the central tower of Angkor Wat. As the light rises along the temple’s main axis, the silhouette slowly glows in the morning sky - The result is a striking alignment that feels too precise to be accidental.
The sun is slowly rising while travellers are getting ready to witness this incredible sight.
It’s a breathtaking moment that has drawn visitors to Siem Reap for generations. When reflected in the famous ponds in front of the temple, the scene becomes even more dramatic — a symmetrical composition of sun, tower, and reflection.
This alignment suggests that Angkor’s architects had a sophisticated understanding of solar movement and astronomy.
This year's March Equinox falls on Friday, the 20th.
For tourism in Siem Reap, the equinox has become a special seasonal highlight. Tour companies offer photography tours, guided historical tours, and there are often cultural performances.
We’re often asked by our guests whether there will actually be a visible sunrise. While the equinox alignment at Angkor Wat happens every year, clear skies are never guaranteed.
The March equinox usually offers the best chance. It falls near the end of the dry season in Siem Reap, when skies tend to be clearer, and visibility is better.
In general, visitors have roughly a 60–75% chance of seeing the sunrise during the March equinox.
But even if clouds hide the perfect alignment, the atmosphere of thousands of people quietly waiting in the dark as Angkor Wat slowly emerges from the night is an unforgettable experience — and one of the most unique mornings you can have in Siem Reap.

Plan ahead.
If you are planning on coming to Siem Reap for the March equinox, we highly recommend leaving the hotel early.
Arrange for your transport at least one day ahead, and have your tickets ready. Arrive by 4:30–4:45 AM. Gates open around 5:00 AM, but the best viewing spots fill quickly. By 5:30 AM, expect very large crowds and limited space near the ponds. These ponds create the iconic mirror reflection of the temple and sunrise. However, there are also quieter alternatives.
A peaceful moment
Watching the sun rise perfectly above the temple’s towers is more than just a photo opportunity. It’s a reminder of the ingenuity of the Khmer builders and the timeless appeal of Angkor Wat.
And for travelers in Siem Reap, it’s a sunrise they’ll never forget.
